GRIZZLY Heavyweight DCP with Drilling Head
The GRIZZLY Constant Energy Heavyweight Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) from Sol Solution is a self propelled rig used for soil investigation and compaction control with attachments for geotechnical drilling and Standard Penetration Test (SPT) sampling.

The GRIZZLY Constant Energy Heavyweight DCP is a rig designed to provide a measure of the in-situ strength of fine- grained and granular subgrades, granular base and sub base materials, and weakly cemented materials.
The equipment is also fitted with a geotechnical drilling head and auger (diameter 63 mm) for soil investigation at low depth and can be used as a Standard Penetration Test (SPT) core sampler.
Applications using this method for soil investigation include:
- Soil studies (buildings, houses, foundations, towers, platforms etc)
- Preparation works (roads, pipes etc)
- Diagnostics evaluations (subsidence, slope stability)
- Inaccessible sites (slopes, rough terrain etc).
In regard to testing bearing capacity and compaction control, the applications include:
- Compaction control of embankments for flexible pavements, unsealed roads and mine access roads, tunnel exits, railway track beds, airport runway and taxiways, hard standing areas, earthworks and other civil engineering
- Compaction control of earth dams, canal building, dikes, trenches for pipelines, cables etc
- Bearing capacity evaluation for building foundations, mobile crane foot standing pads (outriggers) and tank farms.
- Verification of layer thicknesses
- Verification of the homogeneity of compaction
Clients include those involved in pavement construction, pavement rehabilitation, material testing, soil investigation, compaction control, geotechnical testing, geotechnical drilling and site investigation and include road authorities, councils, asset managers, mines, mobile crane operations, engineering and construction groups, subcontractors, geotechnical consultancies and research organisations. Advantages of the GRIZZLY include:
- In situ soil investigation and compaction control with immediate results from the embedded software which allows operator to see the penetrogram directly during the trial.
- Geotechnical drilling head option allows for 2 machines in one (drilling rig and DCP)
- Fast to setup once you have arrived on-site (15 mins) and complete a test (5 mins).
- Repeatable results with continuous measurement, on-screen display and on-site analysis, enabling immediate decision making
- Software has an integrated compaction control data base for various soil types
- Versatile rubber tracked lightweight rig with a low centre of gravity enabling access to most site locations.
- Maximum measuring depth of 10m but depending on the soil, you may be able to investigate deeper.
- One person operation
- GRIZZLY can easily be loaded in a commercial vehicle for transport (no need to have a specific driver’s licence)
- Integrated rod extractor
- Hydraulic vertical and lateral pole adjustment
- GPS-System for immediate test position location and recording
